Flat Feet

  • Flexible flat foot → Fallen longitudinal arch of the foot usually due to laxity of the ligamentous structures supporting the arch

    • Fallen arch in weight bearing position but arch forms again in non weight bearing or heel raise recreates the arch of the foot

  • Rigid flat foot → no arch of the foot is seen during non weight bearing position, heel raise or big toe extension.

  • In toddlers they typically assume a flatfoot posture due to their attempt to maintain a balanced posture

  • In most children the medial longitudinal arch develops between ages 3-10 years of age.
